F2P wartime adventure experience

War of Heroes is a free-to-play adventure experience from MM GZ ENTERTAINMENT. In this strategy and shooter app, you start out as a recruit looking to become the best freedom fighter. Defend innocent civilians from the oppressive regime as you train yourself, build a team, and defeat enemies, mostly zombies, that come your way.

With good visual quality and a variety of perspectives along the way, War of Heroes offers a good way to pass the time. It doesn’t have a full story fleshed out yet and has in-game bugs, but it’s still a good alternative to Left to Survive.

Save comrades and survive

War of Heroes has a number of gimmicks up its sleeve to get players hooked. One is its art style, with the cutscenes and loading screens using a stylized approach similar to wartime propaganda. The same applies to its animated cutscenes that do well to mask the fact that the game doesn’t have a coherent storyline. Players will notice its repeating premise, making the game tiring later on.

In terms of the gameplay itself, it features a 3D overhead perspective. The game shows you and your allies, whenever available, as you fire a variety of weapons against the oncoming horde. It features large buttons fairly spaced from each other, which covers a large part of the screen. Additionally, there are a number of features and add-ons that make each round engaging.

Lastly, while the game features ads, it doesn’t reach a point where it interferes with the game. Watch them, however, and you gain an advantage through extra health, weapons, or ammo. With that said, the game offers a good way to pass the time although it lacks continuity in terms of its content. It has no story and no bosses, just increasingly difficult waves.

A disjointed adventure game

For an adventure game, the lack of story or any form of coherence will definitely create a sense of exhaustion in the players. The game partly works around this by offering a good visual design, both in-game and in the additional materials. Additionally, the shooting-based gameplay keeps itself engaging with increasing difficulty and regular powerups to shake things up. It’s more of a casual game than a proper adventure.

PROS

  • Good visual design
  • Steady difficulty progression

CONS

  • Lacks a coherent plot
  • Huge buttons are spaced far apart
